The comic was written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated by Martin Marazzo, colour by Miroslav Mrva, edited by Karen Berger (Berger Books/ Dark Horse).

We’re working with OCD Action and co-designing with experts and young people who live with OCD.

Acid Box: Comics, Careers & Health

Acid Box is a sci-fi comic book, participatory arts and health project set in a storyworld of sound system culture.

Working with young participants (16-30 years) we explore history of rave; chemistry of psychoactives, whilst developing participants careers in the arts.

Planet Divoc-91 is a sci-fi, pandemic-inspired comic with words and art by iconic comics creators from across the globe. The project captured the attention of leading scientists and policymakers, encouraging them to involve young people in their work. In this participatory arts project, the narrative is informed by the lived experiences of 45 young adults (age 16-25) from South Africa, the UK and India.

Produced by Wowbagger Productions and Vocal (part of Manchester NHS) in association with the Academy of Medical Sciences, this collaborative comic brings together a diverse range of creators working in comics, including Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead, Comics Laureate 2017-19), Charlotte Bailey (Catalyst), Hannah Berry (Livestock, Comics Laureate 2019-21), Karrie Fransman (Gender Swapped Fairytales), Anand RK (Batman), Nick Brokenshire (Star Wars), Bobby Joseph (Scotland Yardie), Rudy Loewe (Conversation on Class), Zara Slattery (Coma Comic), Phelisa Sikwata (Poet) and Rachael Smith (Quarantine Comics).

Created animated film which screened to taskforce of leaders who have now committed £3 million to initiatives creating positive change around mental health (including ITV, SKY, Channel 4, Disney and Endemol Shine).

The Walking Dead immersive @ Thought Bubble 2019. Step into the storyworld of The Walking Dead comic in this real-world installation of scenes inspired by the comic. We'll take you on a journey through 'Camp Bubble' where characters from the comic, have friends they'd like you to meet. The camp is at risk of invasion and needs your help to explore the question 'What is fear for?'.

Immersive Experience based on blockbuster comic The Wicked + The Divine. Worked with Mink Ette at Oubliette Games to explore the question ‘What is Art For? Participants travelled around the room to meet experts (Historian, Philosopher, Psychologist, AI Expert, Evolutionary Biologist) who were dressed as characters inspired by the storyworld.

The Amyg Dala comic was created as part of short-fiction comic anthology ‘24 Panels’ in aid of Grenfell survivors. Art by Caspar Wijngaard, Words by Sara Kenney, Edited by Kieron Gillen. Sara spoke to the psychiatric and PTSD experts working with survivors. Most importantly she spoke to comics fan and Grenfell survivor Tiago Alves and his views changed and impacted the content significantly. Story is a monster metaphor for PTSD.

When someone you love is dying, how far would you go to save them? In this 10-page digital exclusive Surgeon X special - Rosa Scott helps her cousin, Sun Walker, a chemical scientist with a risky plan that could kill or cure. Attending Worthing Wormhole Comic Con to engage with a family audience about antibiotic resistance. We had a team of surgeons, historians and comic creators who ran workshops and chatted to the audience about art and science.

Our team attended the Antibiotic Resistance Lates event. Through the lens of the Surgeon X comic we ran workshops and immersive experiences with a team of surgeons, midwives, historians and comic creators - exploring a world where the antibiotics were no longer working.

This was our first event at Thought Bubble Comic Con where we invited our audience to i) Suture with a Surgeon; ii) Dress wounds with a nurse; iii) Swab and Send with a Microbiologist - all whilst discussing how we can stop antibiotic resistance becoming an apocalyptic problem. Some people stayed for hours, others walked in and straight back out on seeing us all dressed in scrubs! It was an experiment, which we learnt a lot from!

Surgeon X is a comic book series published by Image Comics. Set against the backdrop of an antibiotic apocalypse in near future London, Rosa Scott, a brilliant and obsessive surgeon becomes Surgeon X, a vigilante doctor who uses experimental surgery and black market drugs to treat patients.

Surgeon X risks everything to save lives, but ultimately ends up warping her medical oath to suit her own decisions.

SARA KENNEY, documentary, factual drama and animation filmmaker (Angels and Ghosts) and master artist JOHN WATKISS (Sandman, Conan, Deadman) join forces with KAREN BERGER, award-winning and Vertigo-founding editor to produce this unique, darkly comic medical thriller, which will horrify and delight in equal measure.

Based on a true story, award-winning short Angels and Ghosts tells the emotive tale of Amber, a young woman on a quest to find her brothers who have disappeared. Combining documentary style storytelling with animated drama Angels and Ghosts deftly explores the potent themes of mental health and family bonds, giving a unique insight into an extraordinary complex and often dark world.
